Cambridge A Level Physics is assessed across five externally-marked papers taken together in one series. Two of them - Papers 3 and 5 - assess practical skills, and Paper 3 is a real timed experiment carried out at the bench.

Practical skills in Papers 3 and 5 carry roughly a fifth of the marks. A calculator is allowed and data/formulae are provided.
None of these are about ability. Each one is a mechanism in the exam, and every one of them is trainable.
Paper 3 is two hours of examined practical work - measurement, technique and analysis under timed conditions. Students who only ever meet physics on paper walk into it cold.
Paper 5 rewards experimental design, uncertainty handling and graph analysis, not recall. It is the paper most under-drilled in ordinary lessons.
Cambridge awards method marks for clear physics. Answers that appear without steps, or with the wrong significant figures and units, lose marks the student had already earned.
There is no banking a single paper and moving on. Four A Level papers land in one series, so a shaky topic on the day pulls the whole grade.
Paper 4 is written on the expectation that Paper 1 and 2 material is secure. Students who finish AS and stop revisiting it find the A Level papers quietly harder.

No. Cambridge is effectively linear, without banking individual papers across sessions the way Edexcel allows.

The full A Level is graded A* to E. AS Level, if certificated separately, is graded a to e.
Cambridge runs June and November series, with an additional March series in India.
