Cambridge A Level Biology is assessed across five externally-marked papers taken together in one series. Papers 3 and 5 assess practical skills - Paper 3 at the bench, Paper 5 on planning and analysis - alongside the theory and data-handling papers.

Practical skills in Papers 3 and 5 carry roughly a fifth of the marks. A calculator is allowed.
None of these are about ability. Each one is a mechanism in the exam, and every one of them is trainable.
The mark scheme rewards exact terminology, not the right general idea. Students who know it but phrase it loosely lose marks on the extended-response questions.
Paper 3 is a two-hour practical - microscopy, measurement, biological drawing under time. It rewards supervised, corrected practice.
Paper 4 leans hard on interpreting unfamiliar data, statistics and graphs. Content-confident students often lose marks here because the skill was never separated out and practised.
Four A Level papers span cells to ecosystems in one series. A weak topic on the day carries into the grade.
Paper 4 expects secure AS knowledge. Students who move on and never revisit it find the A Level papers quietly harder.
